when you trek with apus peru 5% of your trek price is donated to Threads of Peru. we support responsible, sustainable & ethical tourism... "Every
person must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism
or the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment. Life's
most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?" |
As part of our commitment to responsible tourism we contribute about 5% of the price of each trek to local communities. We hold this amount "in trust" until we have a substantial sum that can be used to make a real difference to a community. we now exclusively support the Peruvian NGO Threads of Peru. www.threadsofperu.com For current activities and updates refer to our blog Our current projects Chaullacocha bilingual education project Past projects Revitalising weaving traditions project We are also investigating ways to incorporate a 'community activity' in each tour - of perhaps one day - so that international visitors can positively contribute to the communities rather than merely passing through them. You can currently actively participate in the Chaullacocha bilingual education project by going on the Lares to Machu Picchu trek. By doing a trek with Apus Peru you will know that a portion of your trek price is going to Peruvian communities. You will be helping to create real change in Peru by helping communities to help themselves. Aims and goals of Apus Peru's community projects: Apus Peru social projects provide a link between visitors and the Andean communities, via financial donation, and intellectual contribution to projects. We sekke out projects which recognize that insiders (Andean Peruvians) and outsiders (foreigners) all have strengths and weaknesses - and that by working collaboratively we can reach best practice. Rather than simply giving a donation, Apus Peru directors and staff like to be involved at a grassroots level and would like to provide visitors the opportunity to do the same. Apus Peru aims to use the HDI development factor indicators in the Andean communities as measures of development, without negatively impacting upon traditional practices or significantly changing the character of the communities. As such all contributions and actions are considered within the traditional framework of “ayni”. (A peruvian concept which means today for you - tomorrow for me - reciprocity). One of the Directors of Apus Peru, Ariana Svenson, is studying a Masters Thesis in Development and her final thesis topic will centre on the impact of aid in the high Andean communities. |
