highlight: Can´t decide on whether to visit Inca ruins or the fabulous Peruvian jungle? With this adventure tour, visitors have the opportunity to go to places virtually no foreigners venture while seeing the last stronghold of the Incas, the incredible Pongo de Mainique, and the rich jungle. description: A collection of tin shacks in the jungle known as Chuanquiri (San Miguel) is the starting point for a two day round trip hike to the ruins of Espirtu Pampa (Plain of the Spirits). Explorer Hiram Bingham was searching for the last city of the Incas when he accidently re-discovered Machu Picchu - he also discovered the ruins at Espirtu Pampa but believed that they were not the famed last capital. Recent investigation indicates that Espirtu Pampa, was in fact, the last stronghold of the Inca empire. Though currently in the process of restoration, Espirtu Pampa is literally grown over by trees and one feels as if they have genuinely found a lost city. From these remote jungle ruins we journey further into the wilderness and reach the end of the road at Ivochote. The Pongo de Mainique is an awesome canyon through which rush the waters of the Urubamba River. Dangerous swirling waters toss the canoe in rapids while one is entranced by rich wildlife and tumbling cascades. A night in this wilderness, with opportunities to hike, explore and fish in the jungle is a fitting end to this outstanding tour. location: quillabamba (8 hours from cusco) duration: 7 days/ 6 nights (Optional itinerary 8 days/7 nights) level: easy top link: still looking! departs: any day with two people. |
It is only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it were the only one we had. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross |
