La Casa de Melgar

This is a warm and friendly hotel about three blocks from the Plaza de Armas is often recommended by travellers. The architecture is colonial in style with high domed ceilings in the ground floor rooms and is clean. This was the house of Manuel Segundo Ballon, bishop of Arequipa at the end of the 19th century and who organised a trip to the summit of El Misti to erect a cross at its highest point.

The house is built of 'sillar' a white stone typical of Arequipa. All rooms have private bathrooms with hot water. There's a communal room with cable TV and several patios, a garden and a good cafe.
