Adventure & Adrenalin Tour in Peru- full itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Lima
Arrival in Lima, transfer to hotel. Your activities on this day will be dictated by the arrival time of your flight. Many flights from North America arrive late in the day.
The Fair Trade organisation Bridge of Hope has their shop in the Hotel Antigua Miraflores, centrally located about 8 blocks from Kennedy Park. They offer a range of background information on artisans, as well as a range of different products. A great place to start getting a feel for Peruvian artistry, fair trade, and the scope of this field.
www.fairtrdeperu.com
If you arrive earlier than the rest of your tour companions, it is possible to visit some Fair Trade artisan groups in Lima’s outskirts. You will need to pay the cost of this tour yourself. This is an eye-opening excursion into some poor parts of Lima.
Day 2: Lima / Paragliding or surfing
Today you can choose from paragliding or a surfing lesson. As Lima is located along a cliff it is possible to do a tandem ride above the Pacific ocean right from the heart of Miraflores. There is also a huge surf culture in Peru and your other option today is choose a surf lesson to get you started in this awesome sport or to help you polish your skills if you already know how.
Day 3: Lima to Cusco
Today we will fly from Lima to Cusco and will have a free day to acclimatize.
Cusco was the former capital of the Inca empire and remnants from its past can be seen everywhere in its architecture and its people. It was then settled by the Spanish who added their own touches through the construction of churches, cobblestone streets and incredible balconies. Nowadays, Cusco is renowned for everything from its incredible restaurants to artisan markets, its nightlife and as being the base for a host of outdoor activities including; biking, rafting and hiking and we get to do them all!
Day 4: Via Ferrata / Ollantaytambo
This morning we will climb a 300m rock face using a series of steel ladders that have been permanently installed so that even those with no climbing experience will be able to feel the thrill of reaching the top. After you have celebrated your summit and taken in the stunning scenery all around, you will rappel down 100m back to the floor of the Sacred Valley.
We will head to Ollantaytambo for lunch and spend the night. Here you can visit the impressive archaeological site if you like or can spend some time wandering the quaint streets of the only remaining town that follows the original Inca design.
Day 5-7: Lares and Machu Picchu Trek with visit to Threads of Peru supported community.
Day 5: Ollantaytambo - Patacancha - Chaullacocha - Chupani
It is about 1 hour’s drive up hill to Patacancha. In Patacancha, we will start hiking, gently uphill. We hike for about 4-5 hours, crossing a high pass (4200m) before reaching Chaullacocha.
In Chaullacocha, one of the weaving communities supported by Threads of Peru, we will have the opportunity to learn more about this remote village. If you are lucky, the women will be weaving and we can talk to them (via Quechua translators) about their weavings. The school in Chaullacocha is also supported by our organization and if we arrive during a school day the teachers and children will be happy to interact with us.
We will have lunch in Chaullacocha before continuing on for another 1 - 1.5 hours to Chupani. Chupani is another weaving village that is supported by Threads of Peru. Your tour leader will provide more insights into the work done by Threads of Peru while in Chupani. We will camp the night in Chupani where our professional chef will serve up delicious, hot, three course meals. Total hiking – 12km – 6 hrs
Day 6: Chupani - Lares Hot Springs
After a morning visit to the school, we will start climbing uphill on the Colquepata pass, approximately 4100m, and a strong climb straight up for about 2 hours. Though breathless and feeling the climb, we will go slow and be rewarded with truly spectacular views of the mountains and the achievement of reaching the pass will be amazing. From there its all downhill for about 3-4 hours, tough in itself due to the steep incline of the mountain but filled with interactions with the people that we meet along the way and amazing alpine scenery. We have lunch en route and pass through some very remote high settlements. Arrival in the Lares Valley is a relief after the high altiplano – its lush vegetation and pretty farmhouses are warm and welcoming. We will have a well deserved soak in the hot springs of Lares where we will camp for the night.
Total hiking – 10km – 6 hrs
Day 7: Lares Hot Springs - Concani- Quiswarani - transfer to Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes
We are up early and need to head back up the Valley we came down the previous morning, then heading towards the village of Concani (3750 metres/ 12300 feet), approximately1.5 hours of hiking, and then onto the Abra Huillquijasa (4200 metres/ 13776 feet), past the blue or sapphire lagoons to the village of Quiswarani (3700 metres/ 12136 feet). Today we will have a box lunch, to ensure that we make it to Quiswarani in time to take our private transport back to the Sacred Valley and onto Ollantaytambo (approx 4 hour’s drive) where we will take a train to Aguas Calientes.
Day 8: Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu / Santa Teresa
Breakfast included at hotel. Early in the morning (before dawn) we will take a bus up to the ruins of Machu Picchu, so that you can appreciate sunrise from the Watchman's Hut (or Inti Punku if you get up very early). You will then have a 2.5 hour guided tour of Machu Picchu with your guide. After your tour you can further explore the ruins by yourself or climb Huayna Picchu for that classic photo of Machu Picchu. (You need to specify if you would like to climb Huayna Picchu at the time of booking, it costs $10 extra). Also try to fit in a visit to the Temple of the Moon or the fabulous Inca Bridge. We highly recommend walking down from Machu Picchu to get a feeling for the vegetation and also the audacity of its builders. It’s a 1-2 hour walk back to the village of Machu Picchu. Alternatively, you can take the bus which is included in the price of your tour.
We take an afternoon train further along the Urubamba river to the hydroelectric station and from here transfer to the sleepy town of Santa Teresa whose primary attraction is the hot springs located just out of town. Spend the evening relaxing in the hot springs and enjoying a nice, cold beer!
Day 9: River rafting / Santa Teresa
Today we will be taking on a more challenging section of the Urubamba River than most get to experience.
We will start the day off with a safety briefing followed by practice in the river. In the morning we will be running rapids Class II, III and IV, with a lot of nice waves and holes. We stop for a quick lunch between noon and 12: 30 and afterwards we continue paddling through rapids until we reach the town of Chaullay, where we will end our day of rafting.
From here we head back to Santa Teresa where another dip in the hot springs may be appealing after a hard day’s work on the river.
Day 10: Cola de Mono Zipline / Downhill biking / Cusco
Today is another action packed day. Cola de Mono is South America’s longest zipline at 2.5 kilometres and a great way to get your day going and your adrenaline pumping. We will spend the morning here crossing canyons and soaring above the upper edges of Peru’s rainforest.
After this we will grab lunch and say good-bye to Santa Teresa before our ascent back into the Andes. After a 3 hour drive we will reach the Abra Malaga or Malaga pass which sits at 4650 metres. Here we will grab our bikes and get ready for a 2-3 hour descent followed by a relaxed ride through the countryside outside of Ollantaytambo. (There is a support vehicle that will follow the group making it possible to rest if necessary while continuing to enjoy the amazing scenery.)
In Ollantaytambo we will stop for a quick break before continuing the 1.5 hours by vehicle back to Cusco.
Day 11: Free day in Cusco
Today is a free day to enjoy Cusco and to just relax after all that you have accomplished. Or if you still have it in you, to pack in one more activity before heading out to enjoy some of Cusco’s incredible nightlife as a farewell with the group.
