Apus
Peru - the home of alternative treks in Cusco!
Three years ago these routes were considered way off the beaten track and only for the very adventurous. Then, the government introduced regulated the traditional Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, limiting total staff and trekkers to 500 per day. We support the sustainable tourism - but the impact of this regulation has changed the face of trekking around Cusco forever. The Salkantay trek has absorbed much of the "overflow" from the Inca Trail. We call these treks "traditional adventure" - they are still "out of the way" - but its unlikely you will be the only tour group on the trail or in your campsite. These are absolutely great treks - but we don't want to tell you that these routes are untouristed. They have got significant tourist traffic, and this has affected the communities and people along the way. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but the people are no longer untouched! Be a responsible visitor! Take the time to check out the Inka Porter Project, and particularly Guidelines for independent trekking in Peru This page also provides a list of questions to ask your agency when booking from outside Peru, with a focus on porter welfare.
