"The trip was very well organised, up to tiny details, excellent food with a lot of extras, they would have done everything for us :) I didn't like getting up very early much, but it was necessary I think."
- Leni, Germany

Tour to Qeswachaka Bridge

This is an absolutely unique tour. The Q'eswachaka bridge is located across the Apurimac river, at about (3,900m/ 13,000 feet), in Canas province. This handwoven grass bridge spans 120 feet, and is rebuilt every one or two years as communal effort by all the local people of the region. About 700 men and women form the communities Huinchiri, Ccollana come to Q'eswachaka to a Fiesta that celebrates the construction of the bridge. The final day of the fiesta is the second Sunday in June, where you can see typical dances and walk across the completed bridge. You can also visit the bridge site, in the days preceding, to see the bridge building in progress.

The weaving and construction techniques have passed from generation to generation since the bridge was first built by the Incas. It is the only remaining example of an “Inca” hanging bridge that can be seen today.

2 Days - Bridge and bicycle to Qeswachaka - Itinerary

...............................................................................................................................................................................

DAT ONE: Cusco – Qeswachaka: You will be picked from your hotel in a private vehicle, in which we will drive for 2 hours south from Cusco to Pomacanchis Lake (3,600m). Here we get on our mountain bikes to cycle on the rarely used bumpy road – around 20km between Pomacanchis Lake and Acopia Lake. Our private car accompanies us for the whole distance if you decide you don´t want to ride anymore. We transfer to the tiny volcano of Yanaoca to the Abra of Yanaoca. From here it is a 35km descent to Qeswachaka Bridge. This is the last used Inca bridge over the Apurimac River and the grass fibres of the bridge are renewed each year in an “annual construction of the bridge fiesta”. We will camp here, but you should be aware that this will not be “remote” camping as there will be a typical Andean fiesta going on around you.

...............................................................................................................................................................................

DAY TWO: Qeswachaka – Cusco: After breakfast we will have time to cross the bridge, or observe the construction in practice. (depending on what day you visit.) We will continue onto Qarañawi Grotto, which we will explore for several hours before heading back to Cusco in the afternoon. Please email us directly for prices! reservas@apus-peru.com

ITINERARY NOTES
The times cited in this itinerary are approximate. Walking times depend on the group and the guide can change lunch spots and campsites, depending on the progress of the group. Each guide has their own preferred route and it might not correspond exactly to the route described here.
This is an adventurous trip. You should be sure to bring an open mind, flexibility and a sense of humor. Most of all you should be prepared to go with the flow. Most of all, you are joining an Andean fiesta - and you should be willing to accept their means and methods of celebration.
This region is not frequently visited by tourists, therefore tourist infrastructure is limited. This tour incorporates public transport, and use of local facilities. Visitors should be aware that things change, or may not go to plan. This is all part of the adventure!
For organisational reasons, we require one week to organise your booking, prior to departure.
