Itinerary

You arrive in Lima, the City of the Kings and a fabulous melting pot of Creole culture for your ‘Best of Cusco and Machu Picchu 5-day tour’.

As your first introduction to Peru, we have an insightful orientation tour of Lima including a tour of the historic centre including the magnificent Plaza de Armas and Cathedral, followed by a hands-on cooking class on Peruvian Cuisine.

Overnight: Lima

Included meals: D

Your international flight needs to arrive before 12 noon to do this program; if your flight arrives after that time, we recommend arriving 1 day earlier – Day 0.

After an early morning flight, our Cusco based team greet you and start your journey towards the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas, a place of quaint villages, agricultural terraces, and archaeological sites.

Your first visit includes llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas up close!   Then visit Pisac with one of the largest tourist markets in South America, and also experience the impressive Pisac ruins that tower above the town.

From here, we travel through the Sacred Valley to our hotel, nestled in beautiful grounds alongside the Urubamba River,  surrounded by mountains.

Overnight: Yanahuara

Included meals: B, L, D

You head up into the mountains, with amazing views across the Andes before visiting an Incan agricultural station, Moray.

From here, you will be a special guest at the Misminay village, where traditionally dressed community members treat you to a typical Andean meal and share their unique traditions.

Next, head back down towards the valley, with jaw-dropping views unfolding before your eyes as we descend to the Maras salt flats. The salt pools are an incredible sight against the stunning mountain backdrop – a photographer’s dream.

Overnight: Yanahuara

Included meals: B, L, D

How are you going to get to Machu Picchu?

In this tour YOU get to choose whether you take the train or do a short one-day hike.

OPTION A – The Short Inca Trail

After a short train ride, embark on the 1-day Inca Trail, which includes an 8km or 4 hour hike up into the mountains.

After an upwards climb, you arrive at the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna before lunch in the mountains.  Next comes a 1-hour hike to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, from where you will have your first dramatic view of Machu Picchu and get some once in a lifetime photos!

From here descend with views of the ancient City, without entering it, and catch the bus to Aguas Calientes where you enjoy a celebratory dinner.

  • Note, the 1-day hike depends on permit availability.  Can sell out 2 months prior to departure.
  • While this is a short trek, you need to have a reasonable level of fitness to complete it.

OPTION B – Train to Machu Picchu

If you choose this option you will  spend the morning in the Chichubamba community experiencing authentic Andean life – we offer “hands on” ceramic, chocolate making and guinea pig raising workshops.

Next up is Ollantaytambo, home of an impressive Incan fortress and village.  The village and most of its foundations date from the Inca era; enjoy strolling the quaint streets and shopping from local vendors.

Take an afternoon train to Aguas Calientes, travelling through stunning landscapes and alongside a fast-flowing river.

Arriving in Aguas Calientes, you enjoy a celebratory dinner and then prepare for tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.

Overnight: Aguas Calientes

Included meals: B, L, D

Today you visit Machu Picchu!  For many, this is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

Machu Picchu straddles a mountain ridge surrounded by lush tropical forest, and the Inca citadel is one of the most extraordinary examples of landscape architecture in the world.

Apus Peru meticulously plan your day to highlight the visit to the ruins before returning to Cusco by train and car.

Overnight: Cusco

Included meals: B, L

You have two choices today!

  1. Choose to wander the cobble stone streets of Cusco, eating great food or getting in some shopping
  2. Head out to a world-famous Rainbow Mountain, embark on a short hike, and get pics to die for!

We offer two different Rainbow Mountain experiences depending on your fitness.

The original Rainbow Mountain – Vinicunca – is a long day – with 7 hours driving.  The hike is tough due to the high altitude; 4 hours return hike, often in cold conditions.   Your reward is the rainbow-colored reds of the Rainbow Mountain and getting “that picture”.

For those that would like a less challenging option we also offer Palccoyo, another Rainbow Mountain which is less arduous but still very special.
