Itinerary

Your Amazon adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peru’s southern rainforest. From here, enjoy a one-hour drive followed by a peaceful one-hour boat journey along the Tambopata River. As you leave the city behind, the landscape gradually transforms into lush rainforest, taking you deep into the private communal reserve of the Ese Eja Native Community of Infierno.

Enjoy your first taste of Amazonian cuisine along the way before arriving at Kuaii Amazonas Lodge, an ecolodge nestled within the community’s private concession. After reaching the riverbank, climb a staircase whose length varies with the season and follow a short forest trail to the lodge.

Settle into your 24-square-meter room, complete with a private bathroom and an open wall facing the forest, bringing you closer to the sights and sounds of the Amazon. Your stay includes three meals a day, tea, coffee, refreshments upon arrival, guided excursions and activities, and airport transfers. With a guide-to-guest ratio of 1:10, you can enjoy the rainforest with knowledgeable local guidance.

In the afternoon, head out for a visit to the 40-meter Canopy Tower. Climb the safe staircase to the platforms above the treetops and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding forest and the Tambopata River. Keep your eyes open for toucans, parrots and mixed-species bird flocks moving through the canopy.

Before dinner, join an informative evening lecture to learn more about the Amazon’s extraordinary biodiversity and the conservation initiatives helping to protect this unique ecosystem.

Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.

Your national flight needs to arrive before 12 noon to do this program.

Start your morning early, when the rainforest comes alive and wildlife takes advantage of the cooler temperatures. After a boat ride of approximately 30 minutes, continue with a 45-minute hike to Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake.

Once there, explore the lake by catamaran, keeping an eye out for the resident family of giant river otters, as well as caimans, hoatzins and horned screamers. Around 60% of visitors report seeing the giant river otters, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Later, visit Centro Ñape, a community organization dedicated to producing traditional medicines from forest plants. Follow a nature trail and discover how selected plants are used for medicinal and other purposes, gaining insight into the knowledge that local communities have developed through generations of living in the Amazon.

After dinner, you can join an optional night walk through the rainforest. Listen to the sounds of the jungle after dark and look for frogs, insects and other nocturnal creatures. Although mammals are often active at night, they can be difficult to spot, making every encounter a special moment.

After breakfast, venture into the rainforest to visit a magnificent ancient Ceiba tree. Towering above the surrounding vegetation, this impressive giant offers a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Amazon forest. Learn about the ecological importance of large trees and the many forms of life they support.

Continue your cultural discovery with a hands-on culinary experience inspired by the traditions of the Ese Eja people. Together with your guide, learn about local ingredients and help prepare a traditional Ese Eja dish for lunch.

This is a chance for the whole family to discover how food, culture and the rainforest are connected, while gaining a deeper appreciation for the knowledge and traditions of the local community.

Spend the rest of the day enjoying the natural surroundings or choosing from the available activities at the lodge, depending on your family’s interests and energy levels.

Enjoy your final morning surrounded by the sights and sounds of the rainforest before beginning your journey back to Puerto Maldonado.

Over the past four days, your family will have explored the forest canopy, searched for wildlife, learned about Indigenous traditions and discovered how scientists work to understand and protect the Amazon’s extraordinary biodiversity.

Your visit also contributes to the scientific research and conservation efforts supported by Wired Amazon, helping researchers learn more about the ecosystems of the Tambopata region.

Return to Puerto Maldonado for your onward flight, taking home wonderful memories of a family adventure filled with nature, discovery and meaningful experiences in the Peruvian Amazon.
