Why Travel from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado?

If your goal is to discover Peru’s southern Amazon, traveling from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado makes the most sense. It avoids backtracking through Lima and cutting down on extra flights, so you save both time and hassle.

From Cusco, you have flexibility – you can fly directly, take a bus, or even hire a private car – depending on your schedule, budget, and travel style. Starting your travel adventure from Cusco also lets you easily combine it with time in the Andes, Machu Picchu, or the Sacred Valley.

Ways to Travel from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado

Travelers have a few different options to suit their preferences, budget, and sense of adventure. Let me sum it up for you:

By Air – Fastest and Easiest Way to Get from Cusco to PEM

airport in peru jungle

Flying from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is the quickest and most convenient way, taking just around 45 minutes. Especially, if you are short on time, this is the option I recommend for you!

Two airlines currently operate direct flights from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado: LATAM and Sky Airlines (be sure to check for the latest options). Prices can vary widely depending on the season and how far in advance you book, and flights typically run once or twice a day. Keep in mind, however, that these direct flights often sell out quickly, so if you’re booking last minute, you may only have the option to fly via Lima.

Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport is about 4 km from the city center and can be reached by taxi in 15 minutes, or colectivo. If you take a colectivo, head to the Llimacpampa bus station – don’t wait at the bus station next to Collacalle street. Go to the opposite side of the street, next to the bakery. The bus lines El Dorado, Liebre, and Imperial all go to the airport. The fare is just 1 Peruvian sol, usually paid when you leave the bus. A local helper will often announce the stops, shouting “Aeropuerto” and “baja baja!” for anyone getting off – a fun, authentic little local experience! If you’re unsure, just ask “Aeropuerto?” (pronounced: ah-eh-roo-PWER-toh)before hopping on the bus.

By Bus – Accessible and Budget-Friendly Transport

Taking the bus from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is a longer journey, typically around 10 hours, and most travelers opt for overnight buses. The route follows the Interoceanic Highway, a major road that connects Peru’s highlands with the Amazon basin, offering glimpses of changing landscapes along the way.

Several reputable companies operate this route – I recommend choosing Cruz del Sur (they are the ones with the best comfort and service, highly recommended for a tourist who doesn’t speak Spanish) or Civa. Bus tickets vary, with options ranging from standard seats to more spacious semi-cama or cama seats for overnight trips. The roads are generally well-maintained, but expect a winding mountain range before descending into the lowlands. Safety is generally good, but I recommend you to keep your belongings secure and choose a trusted company.

By Bicycle or Organized Adventure Tour – For the Enthusiastic Cyclist

For those seeking a true adventure, it’s possible to drive from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado by bicycle. This route is challenging but incredibly rewarding, taking you from the high Andes down into the lush Amazon basin – an unforgettable journey through dramatically changing climates and landscapes.

Depending on your pace and level of experience, the ride typically takes around 10–12 days. The Interoceanic Highway provides a paved route most of the way, though steep climbs, sharp descents, and variable weather conditions make it best suited for experienced cyclists.

And fun fact: our co-founder Ariana once cycled from Cusco into the rainforest all the way to Manu! We really do love adventures like this.

Having your own car gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints, small Andean villages, and lush cloud forest landscapes that most travelers miss.

While the road is paved and in good condition, be prepared for some sharp curves and occasional fog in higher sections. Make sure your vehicle is in good shape, carry cash for gas stations, and start early to make the most of daylight hours.

You should be an experienced driver with skills in changing tyres and being ready for any eventuality.

Route from Cusco to Urcos (South Valley)

From Cusco, you drive south into the beautiful and less-touristic South Valley, a scenic region dotted with small villages and local life. One interesting stop is Oropesa, famous for its bread – here you’ll see locals waving with plastic bags to catch your attention (so funny!). Treat yourself to a sweet anise-flavored “pan chuta,” sometimes filled with chocolate or caramel cream, a perfect snack for the road.

Further along, you can make a brief stop in Lucre, a charming village with a small plaza, or visit Andahuaylillas, known for its stunning colonial church and the huge tree in the Plaza de Armas. About an hour from Cusco, Urcos is a charming small town at the edge of the highlands, making it another possible stop on your way to Puerto Maldonado. Here, you can stretch your legs, explore the main plaza, and wander through local markets to sample fresh fruits, snacks, or regional treats.

Route to Quincemil and Mazuko

Quincemil is a quiet Andean village that marks the beginning of the descent from the highlands toward the Amazon basin. As you drive through, you’ll notice the landscape gradually changing – the mountains become greener, valleys widen, and rivers start to appear alongside the winding roads. The village itself is small and peaceful, offering a glimpse of everyday life in rural Peru.

Along the route, there are several informal viewpoints where you can stop for photos or simply take in the scenery, with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and meandering rivers.

Route from Quincemil to Mazuko

As you continue descending, Mazuko signals the transition from the high Andes into the tropical lowlands. The air grows warmer, and the landscape becomes lush and green, full of tropical vegetation. This small village is a perfect place to take a break, stretch your legs, and soak in the surroundings. Local markets offer fresh fruits, snacks, and regional treats, ideal for refueling before the final stretch of the journey. Mazuko also gives travelers a glimpse of everyday life in the lowland communities, making it a pleasant and authentic stop on the road to Puerto Maldonado.

After Mazuko, the road continues through increasingly green landscapes, with the Andes giving way to dense forest and the sounds of the jungle. You’ll finally arrive in Puerto Maldonado, a lively Amazonian city that serves as the main gateway to lodges and excursions along the Madre de Dios River.
