Where Can You Go in the Peru Amazon Rainforest?
The Peruvian Amazon covers a huge area, and each region offers something different. Depending on your interests, available time and wider Peru itinerary, you can choose between rainforest lodges, river cruises, wildlife-focused trips and more remote jungle adventures.
Puerto Maldonado & Tambopata National Reserve
Located in the Madre de Dios region, Puerto Maldonado is one of the easiest gateways to the Peruvian Amazon from Cusco. The city is just a short flight from Cusco, making Tambopata a convenient option if you want to add a few days in the Amazon to your Peru itinerary.
From Puerto Maldonado, venture into the Tambopata rainforest on wildlife-focused excursions, where you may spot sloths, howler monkeys and other rainforest species, as well as pink dolphins and giant river otters during boat ride along the rivers. Depending on the Peru Amazon tours, you can also visit clay licks, explore oxbow lakes and look for monkeys, macaws, parrots, caimans and many other rainforest species.
Tambopata is a great choice if you want to add a few days in the Amazon to your Peru trip that already includes the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
Iquitos & Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
Iquitos is the gateway to a completely different part of the Amazon Basin. It cannot be reached by road, so you need to take a flight to get there, usually from Lima.
From Iquitos, which is located in the northern Peruvian Amazon, you can immerse into the rainforest by boat, with options ranging from jungle lodges to multi-day river cruises. To reach the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, you normally travel overland from Iquitos to the town of Nauta and then continue the boat tour into the heart of the jungle. This vast protected area is known for its flooded rainforest, rivers and lagoons, offering a more remote Amazon experience.
Iquitos is particularly well known for its incredible biodiversity and Amazon cruises, jungle lodges and wildlife experiences. Depending on the itinerary, you can hike rainforest trails and waterways, visit local communities and look for wildlife including different species of monkeys, frogs, caimans, macaws and see pink river dolphins.
Amazon River Cruises from Iquitos
Amazon river cruises offer a different way to experience the rainforest. Instead of staying at one lodge and returning to the same base each day, you travel along the river and explore different areas of the Amazon as you go. This allows you to reach more remote parts of the rainforest and experience a wider variety of habitats and waterways.
Cruises typically combine time on the main vessel with excursions by smaller boats and guided rainforest walks. Depending on the itinerary, you may explore tributaries, search for wildlife, visit local communities and take nighttime excursions. At the end of the day, you return to the comfort of the boat, with private cabins, common areas and meals on board.
For travelers who want to combine deeper rainforest exploration with more comfort, an Amazon River cruise can be an interesting alternative to a traditional jungle lodge stay.
Visit the Peruvian Manu National Park
For travelers looking for a more remote expedition deep in the rainforest, Manu National Park offers an unforgettable journey from the Andes into the Amazon. Unlike many Amazon destinations, Manu is reached from Cusco by road, making it a great option if you prefer to avoid flying. For this journey you need more time in the Amazon, so we recommend allowing several days to really appreciate the experience.
One of the highlights of traveling to Manu by road is watching the landscape change gradually along the way. You start in the Andes and pass through beautiful cloud forest before descending into the warmer, greener lowland Amazon. Along the route, you can experience several different ecosystems and see how dramatically the landscape and wildlife change as you travel from the mountains into the rainforest.
Manu National Park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and is a particularly fascinating destination for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers.
You can also visit Tres Cruces, a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Manu region. It is especially famous for its sunrise views, when atmospheric conditions can create the appearance of two sunrises.
