Are you planning a trip to Peru and wondering how to get from Lima to Machu Picchu? You’re not alone! Since most international travelers arrive in Lima, figuring out how to reach the famous Machu PIcchu citadel is one of the first steps when organizing a Peru adventure.
The good news is that traveling from Lima to Machu Picchu is relatively straightforward, although you cannot get there directly by plane or car. Most visitors first travel to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, before continuing through the beautiful Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu.
The most popular option is to fly from Lima to Cusco, take a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, and then catch a short bus up to Machu Picchu. However, there are other possibilities, including traveling by bus from Lima or combining your journey with a multi-day trek.
In this guide, we’ll explain the different ways to travel from Lima to Machu Picchu, how long the journey takes, what it costs, and how to plan your visit without rushing.
Where Is Machu Picchu Located?

Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco region of southern Peru, high in the Andes Mountains at approximately 2,430 meters (7,972 feet) above sea level.
Although Lima is Peru’s capital and main international gateway, Machu Picchu is situated hundreds of kilometers away, surrounded by steep mountains and lush cloud forests.
Unlike many other famous attractions, Machu Picchu cannot be reached directly by car or plane. There is no airport at Machu Picchu, and no regular road connects the archaeological site with Cusco or Lima.
Instead, many travelers generally follow this route:
Lima → Cusco → Ollantaytambo → Aguas Calientes → Machu Picchu

How to Get from Lima to Machu Picchu: Your Travel Options

There are two main ways to begin your journey from Lima: by plane or by long-distance bus.
| Transportation | Approximate travel time | Best for |
| Fly to Cusco from Lima | 1 hour 20 minutes | Fastest and most convenient |
| Bus from Lima to Cusco | 21–24 hours or longer | Travelers with more time |
| Cusco to Ollantaytambo by road | 1.5–2 hours | Connecting to the train |
| Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes by train | 1.5 hours | Scenic journey |

For most travelers, flying from Lima to Cusco and continuing by train is the easiest and most comfortable way to reach Machu Picchu. Read our blog posts on everything you should know about taking the train to Machu Picchu, and how to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
However, we recommend allowing at least a few days for the entire journey rather than trying to visit Machu Picchu immediately after arriving in Peru.
Option 1: Flying from Lima to Cusco – The Fastest Way

The easiest way to travel from Lima to Machu Picchu is to take a flight to Cusco.
Flights depart from Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima and arrive at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.
The direct flight takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, making it by far the quickest way to travel between the two cities.
Several airlines operate this route, including LATAM and JetSMART, depending on current schedules.
There are usually multiple departures throughout the day, although availability and flight times vary.
How Much Does a Flight from Lima to Cusco Cost?
Domestic flight prices vary depending on the airline, travel dates, luggage allowance, and how far in advance you book.
As a general planning estimate, one-way flights can sometimes be found for approximately USD 40–100, although prices may be significantly higher during busy travel periods or when booking at the last minute.
Budget airlines may advertise particularly attractive fares, but remember to check whether checked luggage and other services are included.
If you’re traveling during Peru’s main tourism season, booking your flights months in advance is generally a good idea.
Arriving in Cusco: What Should You Know?

Cusco sits at approximately 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) above sea level, considerably higher than Lima.
This sudden change in altitude can affect travelers, particularly those arriving directly from sea level. Read more about the altitude in Cusco!
We generally recommend spending at least one or two days adjusting to the altitude before undertaking strenuous hikes or demanding activities.
During your first day, take things slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid scheduling too many activities.
If you prefer, you can also travel directly from Cusco Airport to the Sacred Valley, which is located at a lower altitude than Cusco city.
This can be a comfortable way to begin your journey while enjoying the beautiful scenery and archaeological sites of the region.
Option 2: Traveling from Lima to Cusco by Bus

If you have more time available, another option is to travel from Lima to Cusco by long-distance bus.
The journey generally takes approximately 21–24 hours, although travel times can be longer depending on the route, traffic, and road conditions.
Several long-distance bus companies operate services between Lima and Cusco, offering different seating categories and onboard amenities. I recommend booking your ticket online on the platform redbus, here you can also see the reviews of different bus companies and which tools are included.
Some buses provide reclining seats, air conditioning, and additional comfort for overnight journeys.
Is Taking the Bus from Lima to Cusco Worth It?

Traveling by bus from Lima to Cusco can be a good option for budget travelers, backpackers, or anyone who enjoys exploring a country overland rather than flying.
However, keep in mind that this is a very long journey, usually taking around 20–24 hours, depending on the route, bus company, and road conditions. You’ll be traveling through mountainous terrain, and winding roads can make the journey quite exhausting.
But here’s my personal experience: I’m honestly not a big fan of spending endless hours on buses, but I have to admit that Peru has some of the most comfortable long-distance buses I’ve experienced while traveling!
If you choose a good bus company, you can find surprisingly comfortable seats that recline up to 160 or even 180 degrees, almost like a proper bed! Some buses also offer little privacy curtains between passengers, USB charging ports, air conditioning, and other amenities that make overnight journeys much more pleasant.
Of course, not every bus offers the same level of comfort, so it’s worth paying a little extra for a reputable company and a good seat. And one thing I have to mention: the toilets! After so many hours on the road, let’s just say they aren’t always the most pleasant part of the experience. But apart from that, traveling by bus in Peru can actually be quite comfortable.
My recommendation: If your main goal is to visit Machu Picchu and you only have a limited number of days in Peru, I would definitely recommend flying from Lima to Cusco. You’ll save a lot of time and arrive with more energy to explore the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

2-day Cusco to Machu Picchu train trip
All-inclusive train to Machu Picchu including a Sacred Valley tour. Best option for private tour; customize to suit your itinerary.
On the other hand, if you’re planning a longer trip through Peru, traveling overland can be a fantastic way to discover more of the country. Instead of taking a direct bus from Lima to Cusco, consider breaking up your journey with stops in Paracas, Ica, Nazca, and Arequipa.
This way, the journey becomes part of your adventure, allowing you to explore Peru’s coastal deserts, beautiful landscapes, and historic cities before making your way into the Andes.
Can You Take a Train from Lima to Machu Picchu?

No, there is no direct passenger train service connecting Lima with Machu Picchu.
This is a common question among travelers planning their first trip to Peru.
Although Peru has several scenic railway journeys, the tourist trains serving Machu Picchu operate from the Cusco region, not Lima.
To reach Machu Picchu by train, you’ll first need to travel to Cusco or the Sacred Valley.
From there, you can travel by train to Aguas Calientes, the small town located below the archaeological site.

Travel from Cusco to Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is a historic Inca town located in the Sacred Valley, approximately 1.5–2 hours by road from Cusco.
It is one of the main departure points for trains traveling to Machu Picchu.
You can reach Ollantaytambo by private transfer, taxi, or shared transportation.
If you have time, we highly recommend exploring the Sacred Valley before continuing to Machu Picchu.
The region is home to beautiful landscapes, traditional Andean communities, and fascinating archaeological sites such as Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo itself.
At Apus Peru, we particularly enjoy including the Sacred Valley as part of a longer itinerary rather than rushing directly from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
Take the Train to Aguas Calientes

From Ollantaytambo, the train journey to Aguas Calientes takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and definitely plan to do this during the day time as the views are breathtaking!
The railway follows the Urubamba River, passing spectacular mountain scenery before descending toward the cloud forest surrounding Machu Picchu.
Two main train companies operate services to Aguas Calientes:
- PeruRail, offering different train categories, including Expedition and Vistadome services.

Both companies provide scenic journeys, although prices, departure schedules, and onboard amenities differ.
Some services also depart from Cusco-area stations or include a combined bus and train transfer, known as a bimodal service.

Step 3: Getting from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you’re almost there!

From here, you have two options for reaching the entrance.
Taking the Shuttle Bus
The easiest option is to take the official shuttle bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.
The journey takes approximately 25–30 minutes along a winding mountain road.
Buses operate regularly during visiting hours, although waiting times can be longer during busy periods.
We recommend allowing enough time to reach the entrance before your scheduled admission.
Hiking to Machu Picchu
Alternatively, you can walk uphill from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.
The hike involves a steep ascent with numerous stone steps and generally takes around 1.5–2 hours.
For most visitors, especially those arriving after a long journey, the shuttle bus is the more comfortable choice.

How Long Does It Take to Approach to Machu Picchu?

If you travel by plane, road transfer, train, and shuttle bus, the actual transportation time from Lima to Machu Picchu can be approximately 5–7 hours, excluding airport procedures, waiting times, and connections.
In practice, the entire journey often takes considerably longer.
You’ll need to account for airport check-in, baggage collection, transfers, train departure times, and your scheduled Machu Picchu entrance.
For this reason, we generally recommend planning the journey over at least two days.

Important Tips for Planning Your Journey from Lima to Machu Picchu

Book your Machu Picchu entrance ticket first. Entrance tickets are limited and sold for specific dates, circuits, and admission times. Before booking flights and trains, make sure your preferred Machu Picchu visit is available.
Allow time to adjust to the altitude. Cusco is considerably higher than Lima. Avoid scheduling strenuous activities immediately after arriving, particularly if you’re planning to hike.
Check your train departure station. Some trains depart from Ollantaytambo, while other services begin in Cusco or include a bus transfer. Always confirm the exact departure location.
Consider staying in the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley is lower than Cusco and provides a wonderful opportunity to explore traditional villages and archaeological sites before visiting Machu Picchu.
Travel with a small overnight bag. Train companies have luggage restrictions, so it’s often easier to leave your larger suitcase at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.
Don’t schedule tight connections. Weather, transportation delays, and unexpected changes can affect your journey. Allow enough time between flights, trains, and your Machu Picchu entrance.
Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling from Lima to Machu Picchu
No. Machu Picchu does not have an airport. The closest major airport is in Cusco, so travelers generally fly from Lima to Cusco before continuing by road and train.
Lima is approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Machu Picchu in a straight line. However, the actual travel distance is much longer because the route crosses the Andes and requires several transportation connections.
The fastest practical option is to fly from Lima to Cusco, continue to a train station in the Sacred Valley, take the train to Aguas Calientes, and then use the shuttle bus to reach Machu Picchu.
Although a same-day journey may be theoretically possible with carefully coordinated schedules, it is NOT recommended. Flights, transfers, train schedules, and fixed Machu Picchu entrance times make the journey difficult to organize without rushing.
We recommend allowing at least two days, preferably three or four.
For most travelers, flying is the better option because it takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, compared with more than 20 hours by bus.
However, traveling by bus can be worthwhile if you’re planning a longer journey through southern Peru.
Yes, advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly during the high season.
Machu Picchu has several visiting circuits, and each ticket provides access to a specific route and entrance time.
Both options are possible.
Cusco is an excellent base for exploring the region, while staying overnight in Aguas Calientes makes it easier to visit Machu Picchu early in the morning.
For travelers with enough time, we recommend combining a stay in Cusco or the Sacred Valley with one night in Aguas Calientes.
