Iquitos is one of the most fascinating gateways to the Peruvian Amazon. Surrounded by rivers and rainforest and with no road connection to the rest of Peru, the city has a character all of its own. It is also the starting point for a wide range of Amazon experiences, from affordable Amazon lodge stays to comfortable Amazon River cruises deep into the rainforest.
But is Iquitos the right Amazon destination for you?
Peru has several different ways to experience the rainforest. Tambopata is easier to reach from Cusco, while Manu offers a longer and more remote overland journey into the Amazon. Iquitos, meanwhile, combines a spectacular Amazon city with access to the majestic Amazon River, flooded rainforest and the enormous Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Here is what you need to know before choosing an Iquitos Amazon rainforest tour.
Why Visit the Iquitos Amazon Rainforest?

The biggest reason to explore the Amazon of Iquitos is the variety of experiences. Your trip can start in Iquitos city, where you can discover the history and cultures of the Amazon, before heading by boat into the surrounding Peruvian Amazon rainforest. From there, you can explore the heart of the Amazon and areas such as Pacaya Samiria, a vast seasonally flooded reserve of rivers, lagoons and rainforest.
For any traveler, tours in the Amazon offers an unforgettable mix of wildlife and adventure. Paddle by canoe, try piranha fishing, look for pink dolphins, giant river otters, sloths and monkeys, or visit Monkey Island to see rescued monkeys. Night excursions reveal a completely different side of the remote jungle, with nocturnal frogs, insects and other wildlife appearing after dark. You can also learn about traditional medicinal plants and enjoy unexpected wildlife sightings along the Tahuayo river and trails.
The seasonally flooded forests around Pacaya Samiria are particularly rich in wildlife. The reserve is home to more than 1,000 species of vertebrates, including bird species, monkeys, caimans and pink river dolphins. Exploring this unique landscape by boat is one of the experiences that makes an Iquitos jungle tour different from other Amazon destinations in Peru.
Iquitos vs. Tambopata vs. Manu
Each of Peru’s main Amazon destinations offers something different.
Iquitos is a good choice if you want to combine an adventure from Iquitos with an Amazonian city and river travel. Considered the capital of the Amazon, it also gives you access to Pacaya Samiria, one of Peru’s largest protected areas. River-based wildlife watching is an important part of many Iquitos tours.
Tambopata, accessed through Puerto Maldonado, is particularly convenient for travellers coming from Cusco. You can fly from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldonado and continue by road and boat to rainforest lodges. This makes Tambopata a practical choice if you have only a few days to add an Amazon experience to a Cusco and Machu Picchu itinerary. Read more on how to get from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado.

Manu is a different proposition. Reaching the Manu region from Cusco involves a long overland journey rather than a flight into the rainforest. The route passes through changing ecosystems, from the Andes and cloud forest towards the lowland Amazon. The journey takes longer, but it is part of what makes Manu such a distinctive experience. Manu National Park is also one of Peru’s most important protected areas, with an exceptionally high diversity of wildlife.
Let me tell you, there is no single “best” Amazon destination. The right choice depends on how much time you have, where you are travelling from and what kind of rainforest experience you want.
How to Get to Iquitos Amazon Jungle

Getting to Iquitos is part of the adventure. Unlike most destinations in Peru, you cannot simply hop on a bus and drive there. Iquitos has no road connection with the rest of the country, so for most travellers, the journey starts with a flight.
From Lima, the flight to Iquitos airport takes around 1 hour 40 minutes. Coming from Cusco? You will usually connect through Lima before continuing on to Iquitos.
And once you land, the adventure is only just beginning. Depending on your Amazon experience, you may continue by road, boat, or a combination of both.
Heading towards Pacaya Samiria? The journey usually starts with a roughly two-hour drive from Iquitos to Nauta, followed by a boat trip deeper into the rainforest. Other Amazon lodges may involve shorter boat transfers, while cruises can use different departure points and may transfer passengers towards Nauta or another river port.
So while Iquitos may take a little more planning to reach, that is also part of what makes it special. Once the roads disappear and you start travelling by boat, you really feel that you are leaving the city behind and entering the Amazon.
What Is the Weather Like in Iquitos?

Iquitos is hot, humid and tropical throughout the year. There is no cool season like you might experience in the Andes, although rainfall and river levels change during the year.
Temperatures generally remain in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, with occasional hotter conditions. Rain can occur at any time of year.
The wetter period generally runs from around October to April, while June to September tends to be less rainy. Pacaya Samiria’s official tourism information recommends May to September as its main visiting season.
However, don’t assume that “dry season” means no rain. This is still the Amazon, and showers are possible throughout the year.
The time of year can also change the character of your experience. Higher water levels make more areas of the flooded forest accessible by boat, while lower water levels can expose more trails and riverbanks.
Whatever time of year you visit, pack lightweight clothing, good insect repellent, sunscreen and something waterproof. Read more tips in our ultimate jungle packing list!
What Is There to See and Do in Iquitos Apart From Jungle Tours?

One of the advantages of choosing Iquitos is that the city itself is worth exploring!
Explore the historic centre
The centre of Iquitos contains buildings dating from the city’s rubber boom, including the famous Casa de Fierro on the Plaza de Armas. The Malecón Tarapacá runs alongside the river and offers a good introduction to the city’s relationship with the Amazon.
Visit museums
Iquitos has several museums and cultural centres where you can learn more about the Indigenous cultures and history of the Amazon region. The Museum of Amazonian Indigenous Cultures is one option for travellers interested in the cultural side of the region.
Walk along the Malecón
The Malecón Tarapacá is close to the Plaza de Armas and is an easy place to walk, enjoy the river views and get a feel for daily life in the city.
Visit Belén
The Belén district is one of the most recognisable parts of Iquitos, known for its market and its relationship with the waterways surrounding the city. A visit gives you a very different perspective on Amazonian life compared with staying at a lodge.
Try food from the Amazon!

Iquitos is also a great place to try regional dishes and ingredients. Look out for juanes, tacacho con cecina, patarashca, freshwater fish and drinks made from exotic fruits such as aguaje.
Visit the Nanay area
The Nanay River and the meeting of the Nanay and Amazon rivers provide another opportunity to experience the waterways around Iquitos. The Nanay Bridge is also a popular viewpoint outside the city centre.
If you have a few days before or after your jungle tour, Iquitos can easily fill a day or two without stepping onto a jungle trail.
What Are the Main Types of Jungle Tour from Iquitos?

There is more than one way to experience the Amazon from Iquitos.
1. Best jungle lodge tours
This is the classic Iquitos jungle experience with a tour guide.
You travel by boat from Iquitos or Nauta to a rainforest lodge, where you stay for several nights and take guided tours during the day.
Pacaya Samiria offers routes combining boat trips, wildlife observation, birdwatching, hiking and visits to local communities, giving you a glimpse of daily life.
A lodge-based tour is usually the most flexible option if you want several days in the rainforest without committing to a luxury jungle cruise.
2. Amazon River cruises near Iquitos

An Amazon River cruise offers a very different style of jungle experience.
Instead of returning to the same lodge every evening, your accommodation travels with you. Cruise ships navigate the Amazon basin into the heart of the jungle, with daily guided excursions by smaller boat rides and on foot.
Cruises can travel deeper into remote areas and combine rainforest exploration with a much higher level of comfort. The cruise experience is basically travelling on floating hotels while exploring the nature and wildlife, and visiting remote indigenous communities.
3. Short Amazon excursions
If you only have one or two days, there are also shorter day trips from Iquitos. These can include boat excursions, wildlife watching and visits to nearby rainforest areas. You can do it with a private guide, or as a group tour.
They are useful if you are short on time, although a multi-day trip gives you more opportunity to get away from the city and experience the rainforest after dark and at different times of day.
What Is the Best Option If You Are on a Budget?

For travellers watching their budget, a multi-day jungle lodge tour is usually the place to start.
Look for a simple but comfortable lodge with shared excursions, rather than a luxury Amazon River cruise. A three- or four-day lodge stay gives you enough time to experience different activities without the much higher cost associated with premium cruise ships.
It is also worth comparing what is included. A jungle tour may include accommodation, meals, boat transportation, a local guide and activities, making it easier to understand the total cost of your trip.
If your budget is limited, spending several days at a good-value lodge is generally more practical than paying for a luxury cruise.
What Is the Best Option for Family Travellers?

For families, a comfortable jungle lodge can be a good balance between adventure and convenience.
Look for a lodge with private rooms, good food, manageable boat transfers and a flexible itinerary. A private or small-group tour can also make it easier to adapt activities to the ages and interests of your children.
Families who prefer a higher level of comfort may also enjoy a river cruise. Cruises eliminate the need to pack and unpack between different hotels and provide a comfortable base between activities.
The right choice will depend on the children’s ages and how adventurous your family wants the trip to be. (Each company has minimum age conditions – around 6) Younger children may benefit from shorter activities and more comfortable accommodation, while older children and teenagers may enjoy longer jungle walks, wildlife spotting, fishing and boat excursions.
How Many Days Do You Need for an Iquitos Expedition?

If you are mainly interested in the city, you can see some of Iquitos in one or two days.
For a proper Amazon experience, however, we recommend allowing at least three days in the rainforest. This gives you enough time for several different excursions and increases your chances of experiencing the jungle at different times of day.
If you have five days or more, you can slow down and choose a more remote lodge, spend longer in Pacaya Samiria or consider an Amazon River cruise.
A useful itinerary could look like this:
Day 1 – Arrive in Iquitos and explore the city
Days 2–4 – Amazon lodge or Iquitos River cruise
Day 5 – Return to Iquitos and continue your Peru journey
