Visitors encouraged to buy Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu entries early to avoid missing out!

Several weeks ago, the Peruvian government unexpectedly announced changes to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu entry policies.  In part, this was in response to UNESCO´s requirement for a cap on the number of visitors to the site, designed to limit damage to the site.   Beginning in mid-July, entry to Machu Picchu has been restricted to 2,500 individuals per day.  While this may sound like a lot, tickets have been selling out regularly!

In addition, tickets to Huayna Picchu can now be bought  for approximately $10.00 USD (S/. 24.00) in advance, rather than issued free on a first-come-first-served basis.  Because Huayna Picchu is limited to 400 hikers daily, entry is becoming difficult or impossible to get for tourists purchasing tickets at the last minute. This second change has its benefits: instead of having to wake up VERY early to wait in line for tickets, visitors that plan ahead can now ensure their hike up Huayna Picchu and get a little extra rest.

Those who don’t plan ahead are likely to miss out on the opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu!

The Climb Up Huayna Picchu

An additional change affects Inca Trail trekkers only: While Machu Picchu entry is included in the purchase of Inca Trail permits, Huayna Picchu is not.  Unfortunately, this means that visitors arriving by the Inca Trail who wish to hike Huayna Picchu are being required to purchase entry to Huayna Picchu AND Machu Picchu (approximately $55.00 USD or S/. 150.00).  No additional fee is being required of permit holders who can go without climbing Huayna Picchu.

If you will be coming to Cusco soon, make sure you have purchased you Machu and Huayna Picchu tickets in advance.  If you plan to join a trek or tour that features these sites, it is a good idea to book sooner rather than later!  The new Machu Picchu restrictions will favor travellers that plan ahead!
