“Amazing route. Just enough challenge, and a lot of fun. The views are magnificent and I loved the fact that it was so remote.” Serge, Canada. Vilcabamba – Machu Picchu, October 2009.

Machu Picchu By Train 1 or 2 Days

Machu Picchu, an Inca citadel located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, is one of the world’s most well known sacred places.

Machu Picchu (like most of the Quechua names of towns and different sites in the region) is a compound word that comes from machu = old or ancient, and picchu = peak or mountain; therefore, Machupicchu is translated as "Old Mountain". The famous mountain that is seen in front, and appears in most of the classical views of the site is named Huayna Picchu (Young Mountain).

We offer 1 or 2 day tours of Machu Picchu and include a trip to Huayna Picchu if requested.

Two day Machu Picchu by Train (with overnight in Aguas CalienteItinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

In this option you can spend Day 1 in the Sacred Valley or Cusco, making the most of your time, before transferring to Ollantaytambo to take a late afternoon train to Aguas Calientes. (See our options for Sacred Valley one day tours – an excellent combination!) After checking into your good standard Aguas Calientes hotel, you will have a nice dinner and then an early night.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco:

You will be up before dawn to take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu, beating the crowds and having the opportunity to see this World Heritage site in the early morning light. You will have a 3 hour guided tour of the site and can climb Huayna Picchu in order to get that famous shot of Machu Picchu. (Permits need to be organised at the time of booking) Enjoy your buffet lunch at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary lodge before taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes and returning to Cusco via train and bus. This tour is highly recommended for those that want to experience Machu Picchu at dawn, and would like to spend more time at the site.

Aguas Calientes upgrade package (optional) $105 per person on twin share basis  This price doesn’t change depending on the number of people in the group. This package includes.

  • Night in a 3 star hotel, like Killa Inn or La Cabaña.  These are a nice hotels, well decorated, and clean.

  • Dinner at one of Aguas Calientes “best” restaurants, like Indio Feliz or Tree House restaurant and includes one beverage!
  • Buffet lunch at Tinkuy Restaurant, located in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge.
  • With limited eating choices at Machu Picchu hunger tends to send clients to Aguas Calientes; by including the buffet lunch we find that clients can visit Machu Picchu early, then go to the buffet to try lots of different Peruvian (and Western) dishes, and then rest and go back for a second look at Machu Picchu.

  • Return in Vistadome train rather than Expedition train, which gives you the opportunity for a more varied timetable and to return in a nicer train, with big windows in the roof.
